mTip
A simple but fully-featured tip calculator and smart bill splitter.
iOS app · currently being resubmitted to the App Store
Splitting the bill evenly between several people is sometimes just not enough. When one person orders an expensive drink and another skips a pricey dessert, you need more than an even split. mTip provides a simple, attractive way to make everybody happy — without asking for separate checks.
For countries like France, where the tip is included in the price, mTip becomes a powerful bill splitter (with tax = 0%).
Features
- Smart splitting between guests
- Gets the job done with a minimum of interaction
- Three predefined and configurable tip levels
- Change the grand total, and the tip is recalculated
- Change a guest's total, and the tip is recalculated
- One touch to round any value up or down, including a guest's total
- Smart keyboard that shows only the keys you need
- Tip calculated before tax (or after tax when tax = 0)
- International currency support
An App Store heritage
The App Store opened on July 10, 2008 with about 500 apps. mTip arrived in those first weeks — version 1.0 within the store's opening weeks, and by early October 2008 it was already at version 2.1: a lot of iteration for the store's first months. I've long remembered it being listed among the first 500 apps; I can't prove the exact number today — Apple keeps no history that early, and no public list of the launch catalog survives — but by any measure it was one of the very earliest apps. It's also one of the oldest things I've made, kept alive across more than a decade of iOS, from the original 3.5″ iPhone to the iPhone X. For what is “just a tip calculator,” that longevity — and the reviews below — mean a lot to me.
The evolution of mTip
Ten years of small refinements — the interface, the split-the-bill flow, and the layout stretching to fit each new iPhone screen.

Reviews
It is, in the end, just a tip calculator — which is exactly why the reviews matter to me. Here is a selection, kept from over the years.
On the App Store
“Hooray! It's back. I was so sad when the app wouldn't work with iOS 11. I tried 2–3 other tip calculators but really didn't like any of them. So happy the iOS 11 version is here. Love the app.”JYPaulos — v4.0.0, Nov 2017
“Finally a tip application that is easy to use and yet rich with features. Highly recommended… adjust the total being paid and it recalculates the tip and the tip %.”bradhmn54 — v3.0.3, Feb 2012
“One of the best tip apps out! I've tried several, and I really think this is the best one out… the stars feature lets you set three predefined tipping levels.”TVMaestro — v2.1, Feb 2009
“Straightforward to use. I've tried several of the tip calculators… none is easier to use than this one. Once it's set up, it only requires one entry — the bill total.”App Sponge — v2.3, Mar 2009
“Best tip tool around. The new and improved version is the best out there! Gives the user the most flexibility computing tips… SPLIT bills evenly or not. Awesome tool.”iEinstein123456789 — v2.1, Oct 2008
